Dolly Parton secretly traveled to Germany for an experimental cancer treatment about a year before her death, TMZ reports.
Sources familiar with the situation told TMZ that Parton battled cancer during the final year of her life and sought treatment overseas. The kind of treatment she received is not known.
TMZ reported the country icon flew to Frankfurt on a private jet to undergo a procedure and stayed in Germany for about a week before returning home. Parton reportedly believed the treatment helped restore her strength and felt it had been effective.
Parton died Aug. 25 at age 80. Her death was a sudden and unexpected shock to those closest to her, even though people in her inner circle knew she had been sick.
The exact type of cancer Parton had remains unclear.
