Lara Croft actress Alex Wilton Regan says ‘Salem never left Massachusetts’ after Clancy mistrial

Alix Wilton Regan, the actress newly cast as the voice of Lara Croft in two upcoming “Tomb Raider” video games, used her Instagram Story this week to weigh in on Friday’s mistrial in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, writing that “Salem never left Massachusetts.”

In the same post, Ms. Wilton Regan referenced “one man’s word” and “a mistrial delivered by another man’s ego” — an apparent allusion to the lone holdout juror whose refusal to join the rest of the panel led to the deadlock, though she did not name him or specify who she meant. In other posts, she praised Ms. Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, for standing up for “mothers watching” the trial and shared an image of a man groping a statue’s chest with a caption reading “Not all men, but always a man,” according to a Breitbart News report that included screenshots of the Stories. The posts had not been independently reviewed by other outlets at the time of this article, as Instagram Stories typically expire after 24 hours.

A Reddit user who circulated the screenshots said the posts left him “questioning” his excitement for the upcoming Tomb Raider titles, per the Breitbart report.

Ms. Wilton Regan, previously seen opposite Glenn Close in the 2017 film “The Wife,” was unveiled as the new Lara Croft in December, telling fans the casting was the highlight of her career to date. She will voice the character in “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis” and “Tomb Raider: Catalyst.”

The case Ms. Wilton Regan referenced ended Friday when Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after jurors said they could not reach a unanimous verdict. The panel of nine women and three men deadlocked 11-1 in favor of finding Ms. Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity. A note the jury foreperson sent to the court indicated the lone holdout juror had acknowledged doubt but refused to apply it to a verdict — a characterization defense attorneys cited in their unsuccessful bid to have the juror removed or questioned further.

Ms. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has acknowledged strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan — at the family’s Duxbury home in 2023. Her defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and could not be held criminally responsible; prosecutors countered that she was in control of her actions and had planned the killings.

Mr. Reddington said afterward that Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz “doesn’t have a case” and separately accused the holdout juror of having cost the rest of the panel a not-guilty verdict. Mr. Cruz has not announced whether his office will seek a retrial.
