PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A corrections officer driving to work thwarted an attempted street robbery in Paterson.

Passaic County officials say Anthony Bua saw 20-year-old Xiair Lampley knock a man down Sunday night. Lampley then allegedly pointed a handgun at the man’s face.

Bua, who was dressed in his full uniform, got out of his car and identified himself as he aimed his weapon at Lampley.

Lampley then stepped away from the man and ran off. But Bua followed and ordered Lampley to stop near a security gate.

Lampley soon dropped the gun through the gate. Bua ordered Lampley to the ground with his hands behind his back and called Paterson police.

Lampley was charged with robbery and a weapons offense. It wasn’t known Monday if he’s retained an attorney.
