CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island man shot in the thigh by a police officer after allegedly stabbing the officer during an altercation outside a school faces assault and weapons charges.
Brennan Matthew Cronin, 24, of Lincoln was held on $30,000 bail in connection with the confrontation with Officer Michael Petrarca outside Cumberland High School on Saturday night, police announced Monday.
Petrarca approached Cronin when he saw him going through trash cans at the school, police said.
Cronin ran away and fell, allowing Petrarca to catch up, at which point the suspect stabbed the officer in the thigh, according to police. Petrarca then shot Cronin in the thigh.
Both men were taken to the hospital, where the suspect was arraigned.
Cronin is charged with felony assault and battery, assault on a police officer, and possession of a knife, according to court records. He did not enter a plea. No defense attorney was listed. He’s due back in court on Aug. 6.
