GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - A 26-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend inside their upstate New York home last summer.

State police say Christian Benson of Cornwall, New York was arraigned Thursday in Orange County Court and released on his own recognizance. Benson’s lawyers entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Troopers say he and his live-in girlfriend, 30-year-old Kristi Babcock, where handling his handgun inside their Cornwall home last Aug. 16 when it inadvertently fired and killed her. Police the shooting occurred as one of them was handing the gun to the other.



Police say the gun was legally owned and registered to Benson.
