CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) - Iowa prison officials say an inmate has died from complications of a chronic illness.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says in a news release that 54-year-old David Gene Lewis Jr. died Tuesday afternoon in a hospice room of the Iowa Medical and Classification Center, where he had been housed due to the unnamed illness.

Lewis had been serving a five-year sentence for third-degree burglary from Linn County. His incarceration began January.
