VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Lawyers for a Virginia doctor who is accused in a double shooting that wounded him and his wife are requesting a competency evaluation before he stands trial.
Attorneys Ryan Ferguson and William O’Brien told a judge in Virginia Beach on Monday that they will seek the evaluation for Dr. Edwin Cruz, the Virginian Pilot reported.
Cruz, 67, was charged with malicious wounding and firearm charges after Virginia Beach police officers responded to reports of a shooting at his home on May 1, WAVY-TV reported.
Police said Cruz and his wife were found in the home with life-threatening gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital for treatment. Cruz was transported from a hospital to jail on Friday, the Pilot reported. Officials did not reveal the identity of his wife or her current condition.
The Virginia doctor “was on meds and believes them to be a factor” in the shooting, said a bail checklist in Cruz’s court file. Cruz worked in addiction treatment at Right Path Treatment Centers since 2015 and has practiced medicine for more than 20 years in Virginia, the Pilot reported.
