PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say an officer fatally shot a knife-wielding man during a confrontation after police responded to a call about a family fight.
Sgt. Alan Pfohl says an officer shot 24-year-old Francisco Valdez when Valdez approached another officer who had backed up over a couch and fallen onto the floor when Valdez first charged at him.
Pfohl said the officers entered the home after Valdez’s mother said Valdez was acting erratically and she wanted him removed.
According to Pfohl, the officers were speaking with Valdez when he suddenly ran to the kitchen, picked up a knife and charged toward one officer.
Pfohl said Valdez was wanted on a felony warrant alleging a parole violation and had told relatives he wouldn’t go back to prison and would fight police if contacted.
