ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a state health department contractor has been accused of padding his bills and stealing more than $87,000.
They say George Dunkel of Latham was arrested Friday for diverting public money that was intended to promote childhood immunization.
Dunkel, the executive director of the American Academy of Pediatrics District II, was arraigned in Albany City Court on a grand larceny charge and several counts of offering a false instrument for filing.
As a result of the investigation, Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is rejecting a $133,000 contract extension with AAP-II, which has received more than $1.5 million in state funds since 2006 under the immunization contracts.
Calls to Dunkel’s office for comment weren’t answered.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and DiNapoli announced the arrest.
