FRISCO, Colo. (AP) - A former Breckenridge man who pleaded guilty to carrying out what prosecutors called a two-year “campaign of terror” against a woman has pleaded guilty in an agreement under which he was sentenced to 90 days in jail and four years on probation.
John Dailey McAllister was initially charged with nine felonies and 10 misdemeanors for his harassment of Johanna Alperin. He pleaded guilty to felony stalking and misdemeanor harassment and was sentenced Monday, The Summit Daily (bit.ly/2keFfQH) reported.
Prosecutor Lisa Hunt and defense attorney Dana Christiansen agreed the case would be both difficult to prove to a jury and difficult to defend, which led to the plea agreement that also prohibits McAllister from using the internet or contacting Alperin. McAllister has already served 10 days in jail.
Prosecutors alleged McAllister made it clear to Alperin that he knew where she lived, even after she moved; sent her texts indicating she was being followed and created online dating profiles using her name and photo and exchanged emails with would-be suitors before giving them her phone number.
“Her mental health and day-to-day life have been dramatically impacted by this case,” Nancy Black, a psychotherapist with Summit County Advocates for Victims of Assault, testified during the sentencing hearing. “The relentlessness of the assaults and threats have affected jobs, friendships and family - there are layers and layers of trauma.”
District Judge Mark Thompson called the evidence and allegations in the case almost unbelievable in their disturbing content.
Alperin initially didn’t know who her stalker was when the harassment began in June 2014, but she and her attorney were able to subpoena internet companies, court records said. Evidence traced the harassment to McAllister, officials said.
Alperin earlier obtained a $2 million civil judgment against McAllister for defamation, invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress and conspiracy.
