SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A baby sitter has been ordered to spend 10 years in prison for abusing and killing a child she was caring for in Spartanburg County.

Prosecutors said 33-year-old Katie Harris pleaded guilty Friday to voluntary manslaughter. A judge sentenced her to 30 years in prison, but that sentence will be suspended if she successfully serves at least 8 ½ years behind bars, five years of home detention and five years of probation.

Authorities say 3-month-old Everly Dickard died in March 2015, 10 days after he was found unconscious at Harris’ home. Doctors said the baby had a head injury, bleeding on the brain and a head fracture.

Harris was originally charged with homicide by child abuse, but prosecutors say the baby’s family agreed with the plea bargain.
