COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities in Richland County say a man is charged with attempted murder after he led deputies on a chase and tried to hit one of them with his car following a crash.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department told local media outlets that 27-year-old Lawrence Bobby Armstrong ran a stop light in downtown Columbia on Saturday, refused to stop and led deputies on a chase for several miles until he crashed on an off-ramp at Interstate 26.

According to investigators, as one deputy approached Armstrong’s vehicle, Armstrong tried to hit the deputy. He then hit another patrol car trying to block him.

Armstrong fled on foot before deputies arrested him at a nearby house. He’s being held at the county jail and it’s not known if he has an attorney.
