SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - Police in Maryland have charged a woman they say abandoned her newborn baby in a wooded area.
Montgomery County Police previously said a man heard crying Aug. 16 and found the baby girl in a wooded area near a sidewalk. Officers charged 25-year-old Leticia Guzman Thursday with neglect and reckless endangerment, saying she intentionally left the baby there.
A police news release says a hospital informed authorities Guzman came in for care and showed signs of having recently given birth. She denied ever being pregnant.
Officials said they later found evidence of childbirth while searching Guzman’s home under a warrant.
Investigators said Guzman then told them she’d left the baby at a location she couldn’t remember.
The child is in stable condition in Child Welfare Services custody.
