TUCKAHOE, N.Y. (AP) - A defense lawyer says a suburban New York plastic surgeon who was arrested on charges of illegally possessing a cache of assault rifles, handguns and body armor is simply a gun enthusiast, not a threat to public safety.

Lawyer Paul Gentile spoke with some news outlets Thursday about the case against Dr. Matthew Bonnano. Gentile wouldn’t discuss the specific allegations but told the Journal News he thinks the case is “completely out of proportion.”

Gentile tells Newsday Bonnano just enjoys guns and hunting.

Authorities in Westchester County said they found Bonnano illegally had weapons after police got a report that he made threats against his estranged wife, who lives there. He lives on Long Island.

The 47-year-old is jailed without bail on weapons charges while awaiting a court hearing Tuesday.
