NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Marrero woman has been charged in federal court with embezzling more than $536,000 from a clinic that drew most of its revenue through the Medicaid program.
Prosecutors charged 52-year-old Monica Sylvest with one count of health care fraud Wednesday.
In a news release, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite (poh-LEET’) said Sylvest would face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. She’s set for a court appearance Monday.
Sylvest was an administrator at a pediatric clinic from August 2014 through last September. Prosecutors allege that she used a business credit card to purchase luxury items, including jewelry, art and a motorcycle. A criminal bill of information says she disguised payments to the account to make it appear the charges were related to clinic operations.
