OPINION:
Jed Babbin proposes that we disentangle ourselves from the “anti-democratic, do-nothing plutocrats” in the United Nations (“Get the U.S. out of the useless U.N.,” Web, Sept. 29). Surely he knows that the Democrats would never allow such a thing.
Oh, wait, President Clinton and his secretary of state, the late Madeleine Albright, came to the same conclusion. Albright, along with Poland, created the Community of Democracies, which still exists today.
However, it never achieved the status as an alternative to the U.N. that Albright had hoped.

Sadly, the U.N. as a political organization (the General Assembly and the Security Council) is a joke. And the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is a cruel joke.
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has also become politicized, many of the specialized agencies are effective and, really, essential: food, air travel, shipping, mail, weather, tourism, culture, etc.
But today’s Democrats/socialists have moved far to the left of President Clinton, who in 1996 declared that “the era of big government is over.”
