CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York man is facing federal charges linked to the heroin death of a 20-year-old former wrestling champion.
Richard Jacobellis of Ridge was arrested Wednesday and charged in a three-count indictment. His court-appointed attorney, Tracey Gaffey, declined comment after his arraignment. He was ordered held in custody pending a Friday bail hearing.
Prosecutors say Jacobellis sold $100 of heroin to Nicholas Weber in May 2016. Weber was a former Suffolk County high school wrestling champion. Authorities say Weber died of an overdose shortly after using the heroin.
Prosecutors also say Jacobellis continued to sell heroin as recently as last month.
If convicted, the 23-year-old faces up to life in prison.
