SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Prosecutors have filed murder charges against a 25-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing an Iraqi refugee.
The Salt Lake County Attorney’s Office charged Karrar Thaer Suhail Friday with murder, burglary, robbery and obstructing justice.
Suhail is accused of killing Alaa Alkhatawi on Dec. 9 in Salt Lake City. Authorities say Alkhatawi sold prescription pain killer pills such as oxycodone and methadone from his home. They say Suhail purchased pills from Alkhatawi.
It’s not clear if Suhail has an attorney.
Suhail became a suspect after he was found wearing new clothes and boots and with $1,150 in cash. He didn’t’ acknowledge stabbing Alkhatawi, but told investigators he “goes crazy” when he doesn’t get his pills.
Alkhatawi’s friends told the Deseret News that he was a refugee who fled Iraq in the early 1990s.
