HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) - A woman who pleaded guilty to manslaughter for leaving her newborn to die in the trash after giving birth at a Hudson Valley convenience store is heading to prison.

Tara Tomlin received a minimum sentence of five years in prison Thursday in Columbia County Court. In September, the 21-year-old woman pleaded guilty to manslaughter for leaving her newborn son in a plastic bag in a garbage bin outside an Xtra Mart in her Hudson Valley hometown. She gave birth in the store bathroom when she was working on Thanksgiving 2015.

Her lawyer, Michael Howard, says Tomlin comes from a broken home and has no support system. If she had guidance in her life, Howard says things may have turned out differently.
