PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A National Guardsman charged with fatally beating a man in his Rhode Island apartment last weekend has been held without bail.

Troy Ingram appeared in court Tuesday to face a murder charge in the death of 41-year-old Mohsin Muhammad, who was found dead in his Providence apartment at about 1 a.m. Sunday. Ingram didn’t enter a plea and was referred to the public defender’s office.

Police say there is no known relationship between the two. Investigators say the victim, originally from Pakistan, suffered “blunt force trauma.”

Police went to the apartment after co-workers became concerned when Muhammad didn’t show up for work.

A Rhode Island Army National Guard spokesman confirmed the 21-year-old Ingram has served since March 2017.

Ingram’s mother tells The Providence Journal she believes her son is innocent.
