The Navy is investigating the cause of a landing “mishap” aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower on Monday, when two aviators ejected from their aircraft off the coast of Virginia.
Search and rescue personnel recovered the unidentified aviators and returned them to the aircraft carrier, where they are receiving medical care, Navy officials said Tuesday.
“Four shipboard personnel were also injured during the mishap and are receiving medical care,” officials said in a statement. “One sailor is being transported to a Norfolk-area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.”

The Navy said its immediate priority is to make sure the injured personnel receive the care and support they need amid the investigation.
“Carrier crews regularly train for emergencies and unexpected situations during flight operations, and that training enabled the crew to respond quickly and safely,” officials said.
The aviators are assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3, based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.
The Navy didn’t identify the type of plane that was lost, but it operates two types of two-seat aircraft: the F/A-18F Super Hornet strike fighter and the EA-18G Growler, a version of the Super Hornet used for electronic warfare missions.
