The Montgomery County Police Department detained four people it suspects are linked to reports of shots fired Wednesday near Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland.

The police initially responded to the 6600 block of Rockledge Drive at 12:10 p.m., the department said on social media, with no injuries reported.

They then detained four people not identified publicly “in suspected connection with a reported shooting,” the department said in an update on social media.

Walter Johnson, less than a quarter-mile from the area where shots were reportedly fired, was put on secure status, the police said. The department added that it’s investigating whether the shooting reports were valid.

In addition to the high school, North Bethesda Middle School, Tilden Middle School, Ashburton Elementary School, Luxmanor Elementary School, Wyngate Elementary School and the special education-focused Rock Terrace School were put on secure status, Montgomery County Public Schools told Washington’s WTTG.

The status means that “students and staff are brought inside the building and external doors are locked, while normal activities continue inside the school building,” according to the school system.
