The director of a major gun-control advocacy group co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael I. Bloomberg said Wednesday that securing background checks for all gun sales is their top priority, saying that it’s the biggest problem “and also the thing that we can probably do.”
Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said that while they support bills to ban so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazine clips, their focus is on background checks.
“That’s our top priority,” he said. “Other organizations may prioritize different things, but I think we agree that that is the biggest problem and also the thing that we can probably do.”
“If you want to take a comprehensive crack at getting this problem largely solved while the nation is passionate about it, you want to try to get everything done that you can do,” he added. “Some of those pieces are hard. Our view has always been that the biggest fix is background checks for all gun sales … you have to try something, but in the end, we will take everything we can get.”
