  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: LHP Paul Maholm

John Lannan will lead the Nationals into a lefty-left rubber match tonight when the Nationals look to take the series from the Pirates against left-hander Paul Maholm. Maholm, who is 0-3 on the season, is coming off his worst outing of the year -- a 3 2/3 innings affair where he allowed six earned runs off seven hits and three walks to the Marlins. The Nationals offense managed a season-high 15 hits against the Pirates on Sunday. Here are their career numbers against Maholm: Published April 25 2011

  • A .500 team without a .300 hitter

The Nationals will leave Pittsburgh after tonight either one game above or below .500 but right now, they're a .500 team through the season's first 20 games. And, as many a Nationals player or coach or box score will tell you, they're not really hitting yet. The headline to this post isn't exactly true. Wilson Ramos, Laynce Nix, Jason Marquis and Ryan Zimmerman are actually all hitting over .300. But Zimmerman hasn't played since April 9, Marquis only gets at-bats once every five or so days and Nix is primarily a bench player -- though 9-for-30 in that role is an impressive mark. • Werth guns out McCutchen for a rare 9-2 double play to end it

While the rest of the Nationals' offense was rapping out a season-high 15 hits on the Pirates pitching Sunday afternoon, Jayson Werth was 0-for-5 with a run scored. But Werth's impact on the game was still felt. The Pirates were down by three in the bottom of the ninth but when Jose Tabata sent a 1-2 from Drew Storen to right field for a routine fly out, the second out of the inning, McCutchen tried to tag and Werth gunned him down at the plate with help from a sweeping tag by catcher Ivan Rodriguez. • On Desmond's errors and aggressiveness

Ian Desmond was out of the Nationals' lineup on Sunday, a routine day off for the shortstop in part to get Alex Cora some playing time in the series but also to give Desmond a little break as he processes a rough night in the field along with the early struggles he had at the plate and the impending birth of his first child. • Nationals-Pirates officially delayed, pregame notes while we wait

  • Today's lineups: same as Friday's

It's been beautiful all day here in Pittsburgh but apparently the rain is coming. As long as it holds off, though, the Nationals will have this lineup behind Livan Hernandez as he makes his 450th consecutive start. Published April 23 2011

Bryce Harper's slow start may officially be behind him. The 18-year-old outfielder went 3-for-3 on Friday night with a double, a home run, six RBI and two walks in a 17-1 Hagerstown rout. Published April 23 2011

  • The amazingly durable Livan Hernandez

Hernandez will make his 450th consecutive start tonight when the Nationals and Pirates finally open their three-game series at PNC Park, one day after the opener was postponed by rain. That's not 450th career start, that's 450th straight start without ever missing a turn in the rotation. Published April 23 2011

  • Coffey comes through running fine, expects to come off DL Sunday

The rain that washed away the Nationals' Friday night game against the Pirates also altered reliever Todd Coffey's plans to test his strained left calf with some fielding practice. But the right-hander got in some sprints on a Woodway treadmill at PNC Park and came through the running session reporting no issues with the calf. Both he and manager Jim Riggleman expect Coffey to be ready to come off the disabled list on Sunday when he's first eligible. Published April 22 2011

  • Today's Nationals lineup

The tarp is on the field and the rain has been coming down all day but it's been relatively light. The forecast, however, doesn't exactly bode well as it's supposed to rain throughout much of the night. Should the Nationals and Pirates play tonight, Nationals right-hander Livan Hernandez will be making his 450th consecutive start an incredible mark for the durable veteran who has never once been on the disabled list in his 13-plus years in major league baseball. Here are the full lineups. Published April 22 2011

  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: RHP Jeff Karstens
