Nationals Watch Archive: April 2011

  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: Roy Halladay

Does anyone do well against Roy Halladay? The answer to that question might surprise you. The easy answer is no, not really. But when it comes to the Nationals, yes, Ivan Rodriguez and Matt Stairs do. Published April 13 2011

  • The Nationals and the sacrifice bunt: a match made in heaven?

Livan Hernandez did something entertaining in the fourth inning when he decided on his own to lay down a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded and a force out at home. It could have gone wrong -- with Laynce Nix at third base potentially being thrown out at home or, even worse, the Phillies turning a double play, first getting the force at home and then getting Hernandez at first. But when Hernandez saw Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard playing back at first base, he figured now would be the perfect time to drop one down. Published April 13 2011

  • Reaction from the Nationals 7-4 victory over the Phillies

"(Winning) is the only way we're going to (fill the park with Nationals fans)," Jayson Werth said after the Nationals' 7-4 victory over his former team, the Phillies. "We're not going to do it by doing commercials and appearances and charity work. That's not going to get it done. The only way to change the culture here in Washington, D.C., is to win. That was a big win tonight, but we've got to continue to do it." Published April 13 2011

  • With Zimmerman out, expect a steady diet of Hairston, Cora and Morse

With Ryan Zimmerman on the disabled list until at least April 24th, Nationals fans can expect a steady diet of Jerry Hairston Jr., Alex Cora and Michael Morse at third base. Published April 12 2011

  • Despite protest LaRoche sits vs. Phillies, Morse out too

The Nationals waited until close to 4 p.m. today to post their lineup and when they did first baseman Adam LaRoche was surprised, to say the least, that he wasn't in it. Published April 12 2011

  • Nationals call up catcher Jesus Flores

In a surprising move, the Nationals have recalled catcher Jesus Flores from Triple-A Syracuse, a source confirmed, to fill the spot on the 25-man roster vacated when Ryan Zimmerman was put on the 15-day disabled list with an abdominal strain. Published April 12 2011

  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: RHP Joe Blanton

Not to discredit any of the right-hander's body of work, but with the Nationals facing a three-game series with the Phillies, they have to feel a little lucky to have drawn Joe Blanton as the starting pitcher in the first game. Here are their career numbers against him. Published April 12 2011

  • Lineup machinations without Zimmerman

Ryan Zimmerman, who is out with an abdominal strain until at least Sunday, 4/24, is not a replaceable player in the Nationals' lineup. They'll miss his defense, of course, but most likely not nearly as much as they'll miss his .357 average and .486 on-base percentage in the No. 3 slot in the lineup. Published April 12 2011

  • Zimmerman headed to 15-day disabled list

Ryan Zimmerman's abdominal strain is bad enough that the third baseman is headed to the 15-day disabled list, according to a club source. Published April 11 2011

  • Werth and the Phillies: the reunion

Here's what Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Charlie Manuel and others had to say about Werth's first series against his old team. Published April 11 2011

  • Zimmerman, LaRoche and the banged up Nationals

The news on Ryan Zimmerman wasn't great Sunday as the third baseman couldn't offer any timetable for how long he thinks he might be sidelined with an abdominal strain, an injury he's been dealing with since spring training but aggravted Saturday night. Published April 10 2011

  • Zimmerman out with abdominal strain

Ryan Zimmerman is out of the Nationals lineup today, having re-aggravated an abdominal strain diving head first into second base in the third inning on Saturday night. Published April 10 2011

  • Zimmerman out for Mets finale: today's lineup

Ryan Zimmerman is not in the Nationals lineup for their series finale with the Mets this afternoon, giving a new look to the lineup. Rick Ankiel will bat second with Jayson Werth sliding into the three-hole in Zimmerman's place. Alex Cora, playing third, drops down to eighth, moving Danny Espinosa and Ivan Rodriguez up in the lineup. Published April 10 2011

  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: RHP Chris Young

The Nationals will be looking for the series victory today against Mets' right-hander Chris Young. Here's how the Nationals have done in the past against Young: Published April 10 2011

  • Short on relievers, Broderick forced into high-pressure situation

With Nationals manager Jim Riggleman wanting to avoid using Tyler Clippard, Drew Storen, Chad Gaudin and Todd Coffey Saturday night, Brian Broderick found himself trotting in from the bullpen with a runner on third and one out in a one-run ballgame. Published April 10 2011

  • Shoulder pain flares up for LaRoche, who gets a day off

Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche has said from the start that he never expected the pain he felt in his left shoulder, caused by a slight labral tear, would completely go away. But after fielding a bunt Tuesday night in Florida, LaRoche felt his shoulder ache and the same pain cropped up again Friday afternoon when he went to throw to first after fielding a bunt from the speedy Chin-Lung Hu. The pain was enough for him to characterize it as a setback, likening the feeling now more to the way he felt at the start of spring training than the improved way he felt leaving Viera. Published April 9 2011

  • Morse at first base, Hairston in left: today's Nationals' lineup

The Nationals are facing a left-handed starting pitcher for the first time this season, thus producing a lineup that Jim Riggleman had yet to use in its entirety. Published April 9 2011

  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: LHP Chris Capuano

It took the Nationals seven games but today, for the first time this season, they'll face a left-handed starter in the Mets' Chris Capuano. Published April 9 2011

  • Pregame notes from Citi Field

The Nationals still have not settled on a closer with both Storen and Burnett producing effective outings and a note about Wilson Ramos getting more playing time against left-handed pitchers and more back-to-back starts as the season progresses in the next few weeks. Published April 8 2011

  • The Nationals vs. today's starter: RHP R.A. Dickey

Here's today's lineup and their career numbers against Mets right-hander R.A. Dickey. Published April 8 2011
