Summer storms leave destruction, death in wake

Devastating thunderstorms Friday left nine people in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. dead and hundreds of thousands without power in the region as residents across the metro area face more devastating triple-digit temperatures this weekend.

More than two million people across the eastern U.S. lost power after violent storms and two people died, including a 90-year-old woman asleep in bed when a tree slammed into her home, a police spokeswoman said Saturday.
