Bad times, good deals

Why wait for the new year to get a handle on personal finances? There are plenty of free online tools that can aid in the process.

For example, personal finance guru Suze Orman offers online calculators to track expenses and credit card debt at www.suze orman.com.

The expense tracker lets the user list all assets and incomes as well as expenses to get an honest look at the money coming in and going out.

The debt-eliminator calculator enables the user to list all credit card debt to get a clear look at overall debt. Once all the debt is listed, the program spits out a tailored payment plan.

If this help isn’t enough, call the nonprofit Consumer Credit Counseling Service (800/388-2227), Ms. Orman recommends, as the group offers free help to organize and consolidate debt.
