The president has a chance to steal a march on Republicans by proposing in his State of the Union address a freeze on federal spending. He already has taken the first step by freezing federal workers’ pay. There’s a chance Republicans could beat him to that punch by stepping out first and demanding that the president follow their lead on the freeze idea.
By doing so quickly, Republicans can get credit for their own idea. They need to move fast.
Doing nothing is not an option - for either side. That’s doing something and just not saying it. Voters are tired of the bait and switch.
