“The problem is that it’s really hard to block every possible thing,” Mr. Jackson said. “If you’re really going to mount a defense, you’d have to claim everything” associated with the school, which many think is essentially impossible.

Instead, universities will likely lock up the most obvious domain names and hope that’s enough. The true goal, specialists say, is for institutions to appear as if they’ve addressed the problem, thereby relieving nervous parents and alumni.

“If you can protect a few of your main icons, then you can say you’ve done your duty,” Mr. Coopersmith said.
