Luxury home: New home in old neighborhood can be best

While many people love the idea of living within walking distance of shops, restaurants, entertainment, a Metro station and even walking to work, homes in walkable neighborhoods are often older. Perhaps the ultimate luxury is to own a new home that meets high standards for energy efficiency and modern conveniences while offering a prime location in a mature neighborhood.

Crescendo Builders has built an elegant single-family home on an infill lot at the Edgemoore at Rosedale Park in Bethesda, within walking distance of the NIH and Bethesda Metro stops. Residents can walk to shops, restaurants and entertainment venues in downtown Bethesda or walk to the National Institutes of Health or Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for work.

A community center offering recreational amenities is nearby.

On the market for $1,350,000, the home at 4514 Chestnut St. in Bethesda sits on a lot of 4,800 square feet. Crescendo Builders plans to start construction in 2013 of two more single-family homes in this community, each to be priced at approximately $1,500,000.

Standard features for these homes include a classic exterior designed to complement nearby home styles. Each home will have a front porch, custom-designed wood front door with glass inserts, HardiPlank siding, a cultured-stone water table with a flagstone front path and flagstone porch steps, professional landscaping, and a one-car garage.

The home at 4514 Chestnut St. has five bedrooms, four full baths and a half bath. Standard features include 9-foot ceilings on the main level and oak floors on the entire first floor, all-stair landings and the upper-level hall.

The home has recessed lighting throughout, a direct-vent gas fireplace with custom-designed built-in media cabinets, and paneled wainscoting in the dining room, foyer, hall and stairs. There are elegant moldings, including crown moldings, throughout the home, a coffered ceiling and a ceiling fan in the family room, a security system, and a network communication system for voice, data and cable throughout the home. An oversized laundry room on the second floor features tiled flooring, built-in cabinets, counter space and a sink.

The center-island kitchen has maple cabinets painted with white glaze, some glass-front cabinets, under-cabinet lights, a tiled backsplash, stainless-steel appliances and granite counters. The master bath has travertine-look ceramic tile flooring, a marble tub deck, a soaking tub set under casement windows, and a glass-enclosed, multihead shower with a seat.

This home has Energy Star-rated double-hung wood windows with low-emittance-coating glass and three zones of heating and air conditioning that include both gas heat and a heat pump.

The home has a foyer with an adjacent study with windows on two sides. The main level includes a formal dining room and a central staircase to the upper and lower levels. At the back of the house are an open family room with a fireplace and a wall of windows and a sliding glass door, a breakfast area, the center-island kitchen, a pantry, a family entrance off the garage, and a powder room.

The first of two upper levels includes a master suite with a triple window on one wall and two windows on another wall, a double-size walk-in closet and a luxury bath. The second bedroom has a walk-in closet and a private full bath. The third and fourth bedrooms share a connecting bath with a double-sink vanity. The laundry room and a linen closet are nearby.

The second of the upper levels includes a fifth bedroom with a full bath and a double-door closet. This level also has a loft.

Buyers can finish the lower level with a recreation room, a wine cellar, a kitchenette, a bedroom and a full bath.
