MANSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Brooke Leifer is teaching kids about the environment through song.

Brooke, an 11-year-old fifth-grader at the Jordan-Jackson School in Mansfield, helped write and record an original song called “One Earth” to help raise awareness about environmental initiatives. She did it in partnership with Green Schools, a nonprofit organization dedicated to K-12 environmental education in Massachusetts schools.

The song and video showcase the ways in which children can implement green initiatives and make schools more environmentally friendly.

“I saw the videos Brooke made on her YouTube channel, and I thought she had real talent,” Green Schools founder Robin Organ said. “I reached out to her and her family for this special project.”

Organ said she presented Brooke and her father, Scott, with information about how students and schools can be more friendly to the environment, and the father-daughter team came up with lyrics and a music video concept.

The video was shot at at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School in Easton because it’s a “verified green school” by the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, Organ said.

“Brooke is a passionate and invested student in preserving the earth. She’s using her musical talents to become a powerful student voice for protecting the environment,” Organ said.

Scott Leifer said his daughter has always had a knack for music and has been singing and taking piano lessons since she was 6 years old.

For “One Earth,” he said he helped write the lyrics, though Brooke came up with the original melody. The Leifers’ family friend Jeff Pongonis recorded the instrumental backing and produced the song.

Since its debut on Feb. 25, Brooke’s “One Earth” video has gotten 1,500 views on YouTube.

Brooke recently performed the song at the Green Schools National Conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is scheduled to perform “One Earth” at other Green Schools events.

The music video is posted online, and the song is available for purchase through iTunes. All proceeds will be dedicated to supporting Green Schools’ student initiatives.
