MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos says the state’s new online campaign finance filing system is a major step forward toward ensuring that the public knows how money is being spent in the state’s political campaigns.

Condos announced Thursday that candidates, political action committees and political parties involved in the 2016 election had successfully completed the first mandatory online disclosure filing via the new web-based system.

Wednesday was the first filing deadline for the 2016 election cycle.

Condos says the new system provides searchable information for the general public. He says it was long overdue.

As of the end of the day Wednesday, 269 candidates, PACs, and political party committees had registered. By Thursday morning 208 reports had been filed.
