The U.S. has long had a policy of not negotiating with terrorists. Federal law prohibits any person or entity from providing money or material assistance to any terror organization, for any reason. Thus, when Americans are held hostage by terror groups, it is against the law even for family members to pay a ransom for the return of their loved one. The law was created because the payment of ransom will only encourage further acts of violence and kidnapping against Americans.

President Obama is changing that. Though he doesn’t have the authority to unilaterally change the law, on Wednesday he announced a change to policy. The Obama Justice Department will ignore the law and allow families to negotiate for the release of American hostages.

Here’s where the patented Obama double speak and deception comes in.

The president says “I am reaffirming that the United States government will not make concessions such as paying ransom to terrorist groups holding American hostages,” Mr. Obama said. “I firmly believe that the United States government paying ransom to terrorists risks endangering more Americans and funding the very terrorism that we’re trying to stop.”

But apparently if the source of the money is a private account or activist group, Obama doesn’t think the danger is increased.

Mr. Obama said. “When appropriate, our government may assist these families and private efforts in those communications, in part to ensure the safety of family members and to make sure they’re not defrauded.”

The only way a family could be “defrauded” is if there is a transfer of funds or some other sort of support to the terrorists. So sifting through the Obama babble … the government won’t officially negotiate with terrorists…but will assist those who wish to negotiate with them.

It’s bad policy for two reasons. First, it breaks federal law. Second, regardless of the source of the cash, paying ransom to terrorists endangers more Americans and funds the bad guys.

It’s yet another sign of weakness — and another foreign policy blunder by President Obama.
