According to a report release by the police department, Preston Ellis, 57, of Grand Junction was killed when the motorcycle on which he was riding was struck by a pickup truck driven by David Gaines, 17, also of Grand Junction. Gaines left the scene on foot with a rifle and a few minutes later attempted to carjack a Toyota SUV with a woman and her two children inside at a nearby park. Gaines was shot by Grand Junction police officer Martin Donohue during the carjacking attempt. Gaines later died at St. Mary's Hospital.
