In this Sept. 9, 2017 file photo, George Caspermeyer smiles while directing traffic as a crossing guard for Madison School students in Quincy, Ill. Caspermeyer has worked the corner for the last 19 years and plans to not work when the school closes. The retired-Moorman Manufacturing fork lift driver and longtime guard that has guided kids to safety across the street as they walk home will step down when Madison closes next year. With the transitioning of students into a new buildings, there will be less demand for crossing guards. (Jake Shane /The Quincy Herald-Whig via AP)
