FILE - In this Jan. 8, 1973 file photo, a Marine Corps helicopter makes a pass over the Downtown Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in New Orleans firing at the block house at center where police believe sniper Mark Essex was hiding. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Chuck Pitman piloted the aircraft that carried NOPD Sgt. Antoine Saacks and the NOPD officers that shot Essex. The July 7, 2016 sniper attack in Dallas was gloomily reminiscent of the 1973 shooting spree in downtown New Orleans. The attacker was Mark Essex, a black former military man , who was shot and killed from a helicopter. He harbored deep-seated hatred for whites that people who knew him said took root in the Navy.
