Horses frequently share the road with cars in Spencerville. This equestrian-friendly community off New Hampshire Avenue in Montgomery County has almost as many horse-crossing signs as it does stop signs.

The French provincial-style home on more than 5 acres at 1101 Parrs Ridge Drive feels like a country retreat and includes a four-horse barn on the lush grounds.

This six-bedroom home with six full and two half baths is offered for sale at $1,450,000. It boasts ample indoor and outdoor entertaining space, along with a lower-level gym and in-law suite.

The house was constructed in 1982, and the builder lived in it before the current owners. In keeping with the formal French provincial style, where balance and symmetry rule, the home features four steep hip roofs and plenty of arches and curves throughout.

The circular drive branches off into an attached two-car garage, as well as a detached two-car garage on one side of the home and a good-sized parking pad on the other side. A slate walkway leads to the attractive front entrance, where the double doors have a rich glass design.

The foyer has a crystal chandelier, a circular stairway and elegant trim work. In this center-hall floor plan, the living room and dining room are across the foyer from each other. Although the foyer opens directly into the dining room for a nice view of this formal space, the living room offers more privacy and is separated from the foyer by a wall and accessed through the front hallway.

A set of wide curved steps anchored by columns leads into to the sunken living room, large enough to entertain a crowd. It rivals the family room in size. A bay window nearby overlooks the front grounds.

Down the hall is an in-law suite complete with its own fully equipped kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. There’s also an entrance from outside directly into the suite.

Adjacent to this space are a library and office that are next to each other and feature crown molding and a half bath.

Brazilian cherry hardwood floors gleam in the dining room, while three arched mirrors occupy an entire wall and add to the openness. There’s also a bay window with recessed lights in the dining room, offering a view of the front yard.

The dining room has a doorway leading into the stylish and functional kitchen with two ovens, two sinks and cherry cabinets, including one entire wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.

Additional features in this dine-in country kitchen include Corian counters, crown molding, a ceiling fan and a breakfast room overlooking the family room.

Stone planters with marble tops separate the kitchen from the step-down family room. The focal point of this unique family room is a dramatic ceiling-high stone fireplace with a marble hearth that takes up the entire back wall.

The cherry paneling on the family room walls and the beamed ceiling radiate warmth.

Windows on either side of the fireplace welcome the sunshine, and recessed lights add to the nighttime lighting. Large, sturdy wood pocket doors lead from the family room directly into the formal living room.

Four bedrooms are comfortably located on the second floor, where they overlook the scenic woods surrounding the property. Double doors open into the master bedroom, which has a majestic boxed ceiling accented by a ceiling fan. Columns set off the entryway to the dressing-room area, where there are three full-sized closets.

There are two bathrooms in the master suite. One is comparable to a lavish spa, the other a more intimate bath with the basics.

The main master bathroom has glamorous his-and-hers eggshell sinks, stately columns and a royal archway to the oval tub with mirrors.

Of the three remaining bedrooms, one has its own full bathroom, while a set of double doors that can be left open or closed for more privacy leads to a small hall featuring two bedrooms that share a full bath, situated between them.

On the lower level, a brick fireplace sits in the wide, open recreation room. However, for a full workout, the new owners will more likely use the below-ground basketball court with a 20-foot ceiling. It doubles as a racquetball court. At the far end of the basement, three arched glass walls overlook the gym and stairs leading down to the court.

A wet bar in the recreation room features arched column supports and is another great place to host company. In addition to recessed lighting, decorator wall lamps add a classic look to the lower level. A full bedroom and bathroom provide solitude for family members seeking privacy or for overnight guests.

Outside, you’ll find an attractive cabana with French doors that match the home’s architecture. This cabana has a wet bar, and there’s room to add a swimming pool.
