I had an ancient (i.e., circa 2002) scanner I needed to use quickly last night, but no scanner software other than a driver. OK, I thought, Adobe Acrobat Professional should handle this. Well, it didn’t and my attempts to download trial scanning software as a solution (sorry, Belgian firm I.R.I.S.) were unavailing or produced poor results.

What to do?

I tried Photoshop — yes, another Adobe product. One click and, presto!, the image was scanned. It took additional work in Acrobat Professional to make the resulting PDF file suitable for e-mail, but, hey, it worked. Consider this a “tip of the day.”
