Ralph Z. Hallow and Don Lambro reveal the real — and agonizingly simple — cause of $4-plus per gallon gasoline on their “Two Guys in a Newsroom” video on today’s Washington Times. Democrats and, yes, John McCain — striking his usual All-Green All the Time pose — have been blocking domestic production of oil from America’s own vast reserves in Alaska, in the deep ocean waters off our Continental Shelf and from the hundreds of millions of barrels of oil reserves in shale deposits right here in the U.S. of A.

Forget about bogeymen speculators and goofy schemes to impose “windfall profits” taxes on oil companies. What all but those who profit from the environmental lobby say is that unreasonable environmental restrictions have keep American oil companies from building new refineries.

All alternative energy sources are great, including windmills and gas from garbage, so long as they are environmentally safe by reasonable standards and don’t require taxpayer subsidies that hide the real costs — that’s what dispassionate experts in the world of energy economics seem to conclude, time after time. But near term, the only meaningful answer to economy-killing gasoline prices is more production done in a reasonably sound environmental way, Hallow and Lambro conclude from looking at all reports on energy production.
