Georgetown’s brick sidewalks and stately homes have entranced local residents and visitors to Washington since the city was established in 1791. At that time, Georgetown had been an incorporated town for two years and was the only developed neighborhood in the new capital city.

Along one of Georgetown’s best-known streets, the brick residences on N Street have been home to some of the city’s most prominent residents, including President John F. Kennedy, who lived at 3307 N St. NW from 1957 until he and his family moved into the White House in 1961.

Earlier in history, the first mayor of Georgetown, Col. John Cox lived at 3337 N St. NW, and it is believed that he entertained the Marquis de Lafayette there in 1824.



The recently refurbished brick corner home at 3340 N was home to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s aide, Harry Hopkins, in the 1940s. Mr. Hopkins famously went to dinner at the White House in 1940 and stayed on to live there for the next three years. He moved from the White House into the then-freshly remodeled home on N.

Recently completely remodeled and restored, this home is now on the market for $2,495,000. The restoration project, completed this year, was undertaken by John Richardson Ltd., known in Georgetown as a premier provider of period restoration. A plaque outside the door labels the house as “Harry Hopkins House,” but even without the plaque, this residence is easily identifiable as one of Georgetown’s historic landmarks.

As part of the restoration process, the entire structure was re-engineered, and a new copper roof was installed. State-of-the-art technology includes an intercom and phone system as well as AV wiring and Cat-5 upgraded wiring. Built-in speakers were installed throughout the home and a security system was put in place with motion, glass and door sensors. New plumbing and water filters were installed, along with new zoned central air conditioning and dual-zone gas radiator heat.

While the new systems add safety and comfort to the home, the renovation process also included features that restored the historic atmosphere to the home. Reclaimed or original hardwood floors were installed on the three upper levels, custom-designed interior shutters were added and custom-designed period trim and crown moldings were restored or replaced in every room. High ceilings are enhanced with tall double-hung windows, some with the original glass.

The entrance foyer features a staircase to the upper and lower levels, a coat closet and a mirrored pocket door leading to the formal dining room. At the front of the house is the formal living room, which features built-in bookcases, built-in speakers and a period fireplace with a honed granite surround and hearth, plus remote-controlled gas logs.

Pocket doors link the living room with the formal dining room, which has a custom-designed window seat, two built-in bookcases and a china closet with shelves strong enough for storing silver. The dining room has a fireplace with remote-controlled gas logs. Two custom-designed swing doors link the dining room with the kitchen and the butler’s pantry.

This pantry has a marble counter, a sink with instant hot water and a closet with a built-in extra-capacity washer and dryer. The extensive custom-painted cabinetry extends into the adjacent kitchen, which also has marble counters, a custom-designed hardwood floor, a double sink and an antique French hand-painted tile backsplash. The high-end appliances include a Viking six-burner gas range and convection oven, a trash compactor, a dishwasher, a built-in microwave and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The kitchen has a side door to the street with exposed brick steps. Nearby is a powder room with a marble vanity and a skylight.

Hardwood stairs lead to the second floor, which has a landing with a split staircase leading to a linen closet and the master suite. The bedroom features a period fireplace with a marble hearth and surround and remote-controlled gas logs. In the luxurious master bath, arches are above the soaking tub, which has both air and water jets, and above the glass-enclosed marble shower, which has two shower heads. Custom-designed marble vanities are complemented by polished nickel sconces. The adjacent dressing room has extensive built-ins along each wall.

At the front of this level is a second bedroom suite with a wall of built-in shelving and cabinets, an exposed brick wall and a fireplace with a honed granite surround. This bedroom has two closets with built-in shelving. The handsomely tiled adjacent bath features a mahogany and granite vanity, a heated floor and a tumbled-slate shower with a glass door.

Hardwood stairs adjacent to an exposed brick wall lead to the third floor, where a great room can also be used as a third bedroom suite. The bedroom has a custom-designed closet with beadboard wainscoting and a built-in cabinet with a refrigerator and freezer. A glass door leads to the multilevel roof deck, which has custom-designed lattice fencing and rails, brass lanterns and built-in speakers. The full bath on this level has beadboard wainscoting and a claw-foot tub.

The lower level, reached from interior and exterior doors, includes three multipurpose rooms with exposed brick walls, all with heat and air conditioning.

Previous residents have used this space as an office, although it could be used for a nanny suite with the addition of a shower. A powder room has been added. The lower level also has extensive unfinished storage space.

This Georgetown gem features gracious rooms with state-of-the-art improvements, yet retains the charm of its history.
