WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a new program offering rewards to people who tip off police to illegal firearms will help prevent violent crime.

Lanier unveiled the “Got Guns?” initiative on Friday. She says people can call in anonymously and receive up to $1,000 for tips that result in authorities recovering a gun.

In the last 2½ years, Lanier says police have taken more than 6,000 guns off the street. But she says it’s important to recover the guns before crimes are committed.

The department plans to place ads about the program throughout the city. Residents can call 888-919-CRIME (2746) or 202-727-9099.

The announcement comes during the department’s fourth All Hands on Deck effort this year, during which all sworn police patrol the city until 6 a.m. Sunday.
