SAN JOSE, CALIF. (AP) - The mayor is stepping up his efforts to lure the Oakland Athletics to San Jose.
Mayor Chuck Reed wants to put a measure on the November ballot to approve a stadium for the team, even though Major League Baseball has yet to decide whether the club can relocate.
The A’s need the approval of baseball and other team owners to move to San Jose because the San Francisco Giants hold territorial rights to the area.
But the mayor said Thursday he will ask the City Council to approve a ballpark measure for the ballot regardless of where the process stands.
He has previously said that he could not proceed with the ballot measure until baseball officials reached their decision or A’s owner Lew Wolff gave the go-ahead.
