ELKHART LAKE, WIS. (AP) - Driver Joe Foster briefly was hospitalized after a crash with Gunter Schaldach during a Grand Am race at Road America on Saturday that sent Schaldach’s car flipping over a fence and into the woods.

Schaldach said he was “totally fine” after the spectacular accident, but Foster was airlifted to a Milwaukee-area hospital. He was evaluated and released from the hospital later Saturday afternoon.

The brakes on Schaldach’s Camaro malfunctioned and he plowed into the back of Foster’s Mazda going into Turn 1 at the four-mile road course. Schaldach’s car skidded at high speed through a runoff area and into a tire barrier _ then flipped completely over a retaining fence and into a wooded area behind the turn.

Foster’s car slammed into a tire barrier.

In a radio interview, Schaldach estimated his car was going about 160 mph when he wrecked.

“I hit the brake pedal and nothing happened,” he said.
