In his State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Obama stressed “economic fairness” (“Obama calls for taxes, investments,” Web, Tuesday). Sounds really humane, right?

But be careful, America. Devious people used a similar slogan back in 1917 to deceive many Russians. The Central Committee of the Communist Party borrowed a slogan popularized by Karl Marx: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” The result was most Russians reduced to poverty.

Legalized thievery does not work.
