With her recent statement that “our Founders sacrificed everything — their lives, their liberty, their sacred honor — for a democracy,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is playing fast and loose with history. One would think that a former speaker of the House would be more careful.

Our Founders mutually pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor, and they did not create a democracy.

Granted, they wrote only a one-page declaration, not a 2,000-page health care bill, and they have to be forgiven for mentioning the protection of divine Providence, but what they bequeathed to us merits at least accurate description.
