MIAMI (AP) - Police say a shoplifting suspect drowned in a canal near Miami’s Dadeland Mall.

The man ran out of the mall after security notified a Miami-Dade police who was working in the mall on Saturday evening.

The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1m1Xwhy ) the man jumped into the canal running behind the mall. The officer lost sight of the suspect and called police divers to the scene. His body was pulled from the canal.

Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta says that despite some witness accounts, the suspect was not zapped by a stun gun before he ran.

His name hasn’t been released.

The Herald says it is the second drowning this year involving a suspect on the run. In January, a man who’d been handcuffed by police jumped into a canal after running from officers.
