PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A House committee is taking up legislation that would raise the income tax on the richest Rhode Islanders.

The Finance Committee is scheduled to consider on Wednesday a bill by Democratic Rep. Maria Cimini that would raise the tax on people earning at least $250,000 from 5.99 percent to 7.99 percent.

Another bill sponsored by Democratic Rep. Larry Valencia would raise the rate to 10 percent for people earning $200,000 and couples earning $250,000.

Previous efforts to raise taxes on the state’s wealthiest residents have been unsuccessful.

The panel is considering other tax-related proposals Wednesday and Thursday, including ones that would eliminate the sales tax on taxi services and pet grooming.
