PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Clay Pell says he wants to get Rhode Island’s economy moving with steps including an internship program for public high school students, improving the state’s tourism marketing and developing a two-year trade mission to increase international opportunities for Rhode Island business.

Pell set out his economic priorities on Wednesday, his first major policy announcement. He planned to release plans on taxes, education and infrastructure in coming weeks.

Pell says many of his ideas, such as the $2.5 million internship program, don’t have big price tags. He says some can be enacted through executive action, and all can be funded without raising taxes.

He calls it a “question of priorities” and says if he’s elected, the state’s economic growth will be his top priority every single day.
