DOVER, Del. (AP) - The mayor of Dover is resigning after seven years on the job.

The city announced Friday that Carlton Carey Sr. submitted a letter of resignation on Thursday. The city says Carey wants spend more time with his wife and family. His resignation becomes effective Monday.

City Council President Dave Bonar will serve as mayor until a special election is held. Carey served five years on the utility committee and 10 years on the city council before becoming mayor.

His resignation comes as members of the city council propose shifting police department oversight from the mayor to the city manager.

In a statement, Carey thanked city employees for their work and said it had been a pleasure to work with the men and women of the police department.
