FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) - Two St. Lucie County schools were briefly locked down and surrounded by deputies after a BB gun rattled observers.

The sheriff’s office said two boys were spotted with what was believed to be a rifle Friday, prompting the lockdown of Forest Grove Middle School and Fort Pierce Central High School.

Deputies flooded the area, sent a K-9 team and flew in police aircraft overhead. A 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old boy were discovered and reportedly dropped the pellet gun in the woods.

The elder boy faces misdemeanor charges. The younger one will be placed in a juvenile diversion program.
